UniProtKB description: Catalyzes the reversible aldol cleavage of N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid; Neu5Ac) to form pyruvate and N-acetylmannosamine (ManNAc) via a Schiff base intermediate (PubMed:31636419). Cannot use 2,7-anhydro-Neu5Ac (PubMed:31636419). Involved in the degradation of sialic acid, which is present in the host mucus layer and represents a much-coveted source of nutrients for R.gnavus, a prevalent member of the normal gut microbiota (PubMed:31636419).
